Mining FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Coal Mining & Coal Mining Jobs

Q: What is coal mining?

A: Coal mining is the process of extracting coal from the ground. Coal is a fossil fuel that is used to generate electricity, heat buildings, and power industrial processes. The mining process involves removing the topsoil and rock above the coal seam, which is then removed using heavy machinery. The coal is then transported to a processing plant where it is cleaned and prepared for use.

Q: How is coal mined?

A: People who don't know anything about the coal industry still think that you go underground with a pickaxe or that we have canaries that we take into the mine. Mining is very sophisticated. First and foremost, it's much, much safer than it ever has been. Now we're using heavy equipment, diesel equipment, electric equipment, to mine coal. So as we go in and develop, we'll go in and support and bolt the roof to make it safe to be able to travel. We can mine about six (6) tons every thirty (30) seconds right now. It starts with training, then comes the technology. We employ a number of different technologies to ensure not only the production, but also the safety of our miners.

Q: What safety measures do you take?

A: We take several precautions to ensure the safety of our miners. Some examples include:

  • Providing comprehensive training to miners on the hazards of coal mining and the safety procedures they need to follow.

  • Ensuring our miners have access to and use appropriate protective equipment.

  • Ensure that the mine is properly ventilated and maintained with industry standard safety checks.

  • We have developed and implemented emergency response plans to deal with accidents, fires, and other emergencies.

  • We regularly maintain and inspect equipment to ensure that it is safe to use.

  • Bronco Utah complies with all local and national regulations related to coal mining.

Q: What are the environmental impacts of coal mining?

A: Coal mining can have a significant impact on the environment. The mining process can result in the destruction of habitats, the contamination of water sources, and the emission of greenhouse gases. At Bronco Utah, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact and contributing to the well-being of the communities we serve.

Q: How can we apply to work at Bronco Utah?

A: We have several openings available, depending on the time of year and development stage of the mine. Please see our Career Center for more job openings.

Q: How do we buy coal?

A: For coal sales, please reach out to our Vice President of Coal Sales, Kevin Birrell, via email: [email protected]

Q: Is coal going to be around?

A: We are essential to society today. For our way of life, we cannot do without the coal mined that is converted to electricity and other essentials like concrete. Coal mining is not a dying occupation and will continue to be a part of our nation’s, and other nations’, energy portfolio.

Q: Can I make a career out of coal mining?

A: Of course! Did you know that almost any trade school certificate will work in a mine? Electricians, Welders, Heavy Equipment Operators, Mechanics, Engineers, etc. All these trades take place underground, and we need you! The sky's the limit, so whatever skill they want to develop, we have an area and a path for that.
